چکیده
The current document contains a brief description of a system for Reasoning about Actions and Change called PAL (Pertinence Action Language) which makes use of several reasoning properties extracted from a Temporal Expert Systems tool called Medtool.

Encoding probabilistic causal models in probabilistic action language PAL
Pearl’s probabilistic causal model has been used in many domains to reason about causality. Pearl’s treatment of actions is very different from the way actions are represented (explicitly) and their impact is reasoned in most other papers in the literature. In this paper we show how to encode Pearl’s probabilistic causal model in the action language PAL thus relating this two distinct approache...
متن کاملPertinence Logic for Reasoning about Actions and Change
We discuss a new approach to dealing with causality in reasoning about actions and change. First, we introduce the logic of pertinence L 2 to describe knowledge over a static domain {especially the causal innuences. Second, action execution and its direct and ramiied eeects are captured by the straightforward extension of L 2 to ACL 2. We argue that reasoning with pertinence, as embodied in the...

متن کاملSAVVY SEARCHING Pertinence in the eye of the user
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the issue of pertinence when using search databases. Design/methodology/approach – Several information systems are evaluated to show how user preferences are accommodated. Findings – The paper shows that the word “relevance” is the preferred term to “pertinence” when using English language databases. Originality/value – Shows the importance in t...
متن کاملPertinence Logic Characterisation of Stable Models (Preliminary Report)
On the line of Here-and-There logic by D. Pearce, this work introduces a emantics based on Pertinence Logic for the Stable Models emantics of Logic Programs proposed by M. Gelfond and V. Lifschitz. This semantics is useful for the strong equivalence of programs. Pertinence Logic is a causal formalism suitable for action descriptions, thus this characterization contributes to the relationship be...
